Paint Flaking Causes & Solutions

What is Flaking?

Constantly having flaking paint problems or staring at a cracked ceiling? The issue could be how many coats of paint you may have painted over, leading to hairline cracks, and ultimately, flaking. The constant flaking may be due to constantly adding extra coats of paint or painting over spots or abrasions, leading to surface pressure and flaking paint. Ceiling paints, such as water-based paint spread over enamel-based paints can also lead to this issue. Additionally, incorrect application of the paint, such as painted surface exposed to water can lead to paint absorption and peeling paint. See our video on Problem Ceilings for an explanation on why this occurs.

Preventing and Removing Flaking:

Paint flaking can be prevented by ensuring the surface is pre-prepared in advance to laying down the primer and the first coat of paint. However, if looking at removing flaking from an existing surface, use a wire brush or a scraper to remove paint flakes, and sand down the surface. Using a top quality primer and applying a top coat can prevent the problem from reoccurring. Additionally, making sure the surface is washed with proper cleansing liquids, such as sugar soap, can be a cost-effective and low-maintenance way to keep the painted surface looking clean and to prevent flaking in the future.

Surface treatment is key in prevention of flaking; so make sure that primer and top coats are laid down after sanding and preparing the surface in advance, and that surfaces are kept clean regularly over time. Local stores, such as Masters or Bunnings also provide helpful step-by-step tips and proper paints to use to prevent flaking. Early prevention of flaking can lead to cleaner, in-tact ceilings and surfaces.
