Adding a Feature Wall

by Ali |

If you are wanting to add some interest and personality into your property a feature wall can do just that. It gives you the chance to experiment with colours and patterns. It’s also a quick way to really liven up a space. Feature walls can be high-impact, but they don’t have to be. You can create a feature as wild or as subtle as you desire.

Firstly choose the wall you wish to make a feature. It is best to choose a wall with a focal point. The feature wall should be used to highlight the room’s existing focal point. A fire place mantel, artwork, bedhead or alcove are perfect spots. Whilst some feature walls will be used on walls which have a door or window it is best to avoid walls that have any extremely large openings as it will lessen the impact of the change which you are trying to accomplish.

Secondly, choose a colour which complements the rest of the room. It should have the impact you want to have on the space. You may have a favourite colour you wish to use in mind. However, we would recommend picking something in the room that you absolute love and complement it that way. The colour you choose needs to go well with the rest of the room. It is best to test different colours with charts and paint chips to ensure you are making the right decision.  This will give you a good idea of how the colour you choose will effect the space.

Alternatively, if you want to add some drama to the room then a wallpaper would do just that.  Not only does it add a feature but it adds texture, drama and mood really well. If you do have a wallpaper in mind you could choose a paint colour similar to the paper and paint the wall in that colour fist to ensure you are making the right decision.

Overall, if you are wanting a cost effective and inexpensive way to update your space without making a huge monetary commitment then use paint to create your feature wall. It is the easiest material which you can change if you decide you don’t like the colour you have chosen or the wall you have chosen.  However, it is the best material to create a space which shows personality and character. If you are wanting a more dramatic feel go with wallpaper although it can be much more costly than paint it can also add an entirely new dimension to your space.
